The Helvetica Movie

In the interview from Type Radio Bierut talks about his involvement in the Helvetica Movie and I found a clip of his part in it.

In the clip he talks about when the Helvetica revolution came about and the typical type the fifties had before the use of Helvetica.

THE NOTE BOOK

Michael Bierut is noticeable known for his humongous build up of notebooks starting from his first in August 12, 1982. He explains that a notebook is like a security blanket for him and he feels list with out one with him even if he doesn't open it. Looking through some of his work it seems that he does quite a lot of rough sketches in them, some of which are the final outcomes in his projects.
Michael Bierut is very passionate with his work and had a great knack for lecturing that makes his talk very interesting. His personality and charisma also shine through in his writing on the design observer website that really helped me get a feel for his character.

Bierut Typography work

Quite a lot of his typography work is black and white and very dynamic and if not black and white he uses a simplistic colour palette. These example of type are very layered and effective in composition.

Michael Bierut's work

Here are a few sample of Michael Bieruts work ranging from his book cover to fonts that he helped design as part of a project for the Art and Design Museum.

Michael Bierut

Michael Bierut is a graphic designer and critic. He began working as a graphic designer at Vignelli Associates and stayed there for a number of years before working at the Pentagram were he is still currently situated.

Here are a couple of videos I've watched on Michael Bierut

Last Brief of the Year

The new unit is called Visual Communication in Context and its the last brief we're being given for this year. At the briefing we were all assigned a designer each that had appeared on "Type Radio" a radio station. I received Michael Bierut.
The project brief was to create a 4 page spread containing the interviews from Type Radio along with a set illustrations. We all had to listen and transcribe the interview and select a part to go into out magazine spread.

In order to create an article based around Michael Bierut I need to research into Bierut's work and personality along with research into magazine layouts, type etc. To gain a better understanding of magazine design.

Flash Crit

Today we had our first flash crit with justin in small groups. The feedback I received from this session was good and helped my to further develop my animation. I knew going into the crit that I was not happy with my animation visuals and that the would be one of the things i would change. Coming out of the crit I've got new and improved plans for the direction of my animation.

Hope it goes well!

Presentation of Storyboard...

Today we presented our storyboards in small groups. We had to say what we planed to happen in the animation from start to finish and what message we plan to communicate through the animation.

Working through the story really helped me to visualize how the animation would look and how I would then transfer that over on to flash. Overall the session was helpful in getting me ready to start animating.

Now is all up to me and flash!! :S

I've also been looking at other story boards used in animation like Monsters INK and the new film Up which all base the animation around a couple of storyboards and character development sketches. It just helped to stresses the point of how important it was that I had finished my storyboard so I could move onto the next stage.

NEW BRIEF FOR A NEW YEAR!

Screen Based Communication

Description: we were asked to create a piece of animation lasting between 30 and 90 seconds that communicate statistics. The statistics can be based around anything e.g. using metaphors to explain the statistics or mapping statistics one against the other to show the differences.

I also had an Idea generation session today to talk openly about the beginning of an idea from my class mates. The result of the session was that we all need to narrow down a themes and do some research into theme and be very specific in your opinion being pro or con.
I've looked into some ideas including the use of internet around the world, Population, cctv cameras (the best one so far and one I'll develop further) and heath and safety

It is early stages yet however the project is only 6 weeks long.

Final Visual for W.O.W

Evaluation

The project on war on want was a five week project to produce a Ad-shel poster on the war on want charity and a money saving advertisement idea to go along side the poster design. This project started with a talk from war on want to give us some information on their aims and what they are all about. I had not heard of war on want beforehand and the talk gave me some good insight into the charity and how passionate they on what they do for disadvantaged people. The facts given about the working conditions of the workers and the lack of knowledge they have to their human rights have helped me to try and create a poster design that will promote war on wants efforts and cause.
I started by doing some more research into war on want mostly from their website and the newsletters on their campaigns. This helped me to get a feel of their identity and what they wanted to achieve from a Ad-shel poster design. On of their popular campaigns was “Love fashion Hate sweatshops” which they also talked about when the came to the university as the deal with quite a lot of political issue and want to improve the condition of workers not just get rid of sweatshops. I then did some general research into a select few of the other charities so that I could see how they advertised and how they got their particular charity recognised by the public. This help me to see what charity adverts were out there and what they added into the adverts.
The idea generation for this project was helped by the research done on war on want as after reading the different campaigns that war on want are apart of, I could then start to narrow down the different routes and choose a theme for the Ad-shel design. The experiments I’ve done on my chosen idea each helped me to slowly develop and refine my visuals. The tutorial discussions helped to bring different ideas and pushed me to explore different thing. The feedback from my class mates also helped in seeing how a younger audience thought about my ideas and their input helped on the thing I had not considered.
I’ve gone through many stages of development to see what thing would look like, from doing illustrations to moving on to computer based developments. In the end I’m happy with the final visual produced for this project.
The final poster design is a simple visual of four plain tags that and text asking and informing the viewer about wan on want and the sweatshop issues. This idea is that the background of the poster would be seen so that the street/location of the bus stop could be seen through the poster. They idea of the poster is to get people more aware of the issues they have heard but not really thought about. And to help advertise what war and want’s cause by encouraging donations or support.
I believe that final visual works as a poster advertising war on want and the issues of sweatshops. I like the fact that after all the experiments the visual has been watered down to something more subtle and interesting to look at. The simplicity helps with the fact that people are not always at bus stops for a long period of time and with a quick glance the viewer could read the facts and take in the message easily. The poster also is in keeping with War on wants identity with the logo and the use of black, white and red in the poster, which is one of the ways to help war on want be recognised. This is a technique that many adverts use. The poster is also effective in the way that my 2nd dimension is also based around tags and when people see the tag, colours and war on want logo that can immediately begin to associate war on want with these sweatshop free clothing brands. This would help war on want get more publicity and gain supporters from people shopping at these shops and looking at their website which is stated in both the poster and the tags.
Over al in this project I believe I have improved in my time management and organisation skill from the first project. I was able to produce ideas and visual in time for tutorials and crit’s so to get feedback that helped me to further improve my visual. I may need to produce a couple more thumbnail ideas before choosing one to take forward so that I can explore different option and choose the best. However I do believe that the overall finished visual is effective in it message and engages with the viewers as its asked a rhetorical question that most people have to think about and may not even know the answer to. So ensuring that they would be intrigued and browse the war on want website for answers.
I believe that in this project I’ve made some improvements to my way of working and thinking. For the next project I would like to continue my process of development as that really helped me a lot in this project as a way of trial and error the support and advice from the tutors have definitely helped the development the poster design as they the posed questions I have not taken into consideration. I hope to gradually improve my skill through the series of projects and try to take the feedback given into my next project.

Second Dimension

My second dimension idea is that a series of tags will be placed into sweatshop free clothing stores to help promote possive shopping. The tags will be placed on the the hangers along with the brand tags and are there to make people aware that they are buying ethically produced garments and information on the charity war on want

Final Change in Poster Visual

After having a crit on the poster designs. I’ve talked through the good and bad elements of the poster visual. And have re-design the visual poster. The tags are now going to be black and the surrounding text is going to engage with the audience more. After the crit I have done a series of new poster visuals and will be continuing the development until the best result occurs.

Change of Poster Visual

I felt that the pevious experiments had not have the best visual outcomes and decided that I want the Ad-shel itself to be filled with thousands of tags. So that people could see the multiple brands and tags there are and see of they are aware of which ones are sweatshop users.
